Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators

We support The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. SCBWI is the only professional organization specifically for individuals who write and illustrate for children and young adults. Our mission is to support the creation and availability of quality children’s books in every region of the world.

1% for the Planet was founded on the model of our business membership program: responsible businesses giving back to environmental nonprofits to create a healthier planet. Business members join our network, committing to donate the equivalent of 1% of gross sales through a combination of monetary, in-kind and approved promotional support directly to environmental nonprofits.

Imagine you are sitting on a beautiful, sunny beach with your children. You watch as dolphins leap out of the sea in perfect arcs against a clear blue sky. You turn to your children and say, “Kids, look at the amazing performance these dolphins are putting on for you!”, but all your kids do is shrug as they stare with blank faces into the screens of their devices.

That was me, sitting on the beach and growing with concern as I watched how my kids’ attention was being consumed by their digital devices with no productive outcome. As a concerned Dad, I knew I had to do something. Knowing how much my kids liked writing and drawing, I imagined creating a platform where they could write, illustrate, and publish their own stories and books.

In order to bring this dream to life, I was fortunate to enlist the support of like-minded educators, digital pioneers, and visionaries. Together we are Baobabooks, a group of innovators driven to have a positive social impact and focused on engaging broadly to lower barriers to education, encourage cross-cultural collaboration and provide a safe environment for kids to freely express their creativity. We partner with educators and families to create a place for children to awaken their imagination through the positive use of technology.
